World Cup journalists face US visa hurdles ahead of 2026 tournament

The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) has warned that many journalists accredited by FIFA are being denied or delayed US visas needed to cover the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. AIPS president Gianni Merlo sent a letter to FIFA media officials on 5 June, describing the situation as “unacceptable” and urging the governing body to intervene. The association cites numerous cases involving reporters from Iran, Africa and other regions, some of whom have received only single‑entry visas that would prevent them from returning to the US if they travel to matches in Canada or Mexico. Delays have already caused financial losses for journalists, including cancelled flights and extra expenses. AIPS argues that restricting accredited press contradicts the sport’s role in promoting freedom of expression and international understanding.
