World Cup lifts UK pub sales and inspires Miami Tartan Army weekend petition

UK pubs have seen a sharp rise in beer sales as England advanced in the World Cup. The Bread and Cheese pub in Thundersley expects an extra £7,000‑£9,000 on the night of England’s match, while the British Beer and Pub Association said up to 6 million extra pints could be sold on a typical Wednesday. Trade body UK Hospitality reported 5.5 million additional pints during the group stage, but also warned that 161 pubs closed earlier this year and called for lower business rates and taxes.

In Miami, thousands of Scottish supporters – the “Tartan Army” – crowded bars for the Brazil match. A petition with over 200 signatures now asks city officials to designate an annual “Tartan Army Weekend,” citing Boston’s recent sister‑city partnership with Glasgow as a model. The petition reads, “No Scotland, no party,” and seeks formal recognition from Miami, Miami Beach and Miami‑Dade County.
