World Day Against the Death Penalty marked by failed Tennessee execution

The World Day Against the Death Penalty, observed annually on October 10 since 2003, aims to promote the global abolition of capital punishment and raise awareness for human rights and justice.

This year's observance is highlighted by a recent incident in Tennessee, where an execution attempt on Christa Pike failed. Pike survived two doses of lethal injection on September 30 and remains in critical condition. Following the incident, three Catholic bishops in Tennessee issued a statement reaffirming the Church's opposition to the death penalty and calling for her sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment.

Catholic organizations across the United States, including the Catholic Mobilizing Network, have joined the call for abolition, citing the Pike case as a significant example of the consequences of capital punishment.
