AI infrastructure expansion faces critical power and grid constraints
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is creating significant strain on global energy infrastructure. Data centers are projected to consume approximately 3% of the world's electricity by 2030. This surge is driven by extreme rack densities, with AI-specific server racks drawing roughly twenty times more power than standard units.
A Morgan Stanley research report indicates that the AI race may increasingly depend on securing electricity and infrastructure rather than just chip supply. The report estimates that US data center developers could face a 32-gigawatt power shortfall through 2028, representing about 34% of projected requirements. This energy scarcity is expected to favor large, credit-worthy technology companies, potentially leaving smaller players at a disadvantage.
Infrastructure challenges are already impacting specific projects. In the United Kingdom, 315 data centers were awaiting grid connections as of July 2026, with total demand reaching 73 GW against a national maximum of 45 GW. Consequently, Microsoft recently withdrew from a deal with the UK-based AI infrastructure firm Nscale in Essex due to significant delays in securing a grid connection, which could extend into the 2030s.
Furthermore, the physical build-out of AI infrastructure is facing headwinds. At least 47 major AI infrastructure projects were reported as delayed or cancelled in 2026 due to issues involving power availability, financing, permitting, and community opposition.
