World Environment Day Highlights Microplastic Risks in Baby Food

World Environment Day is observed each year on June 5, a UN‑designated day established after the 1972 Stockholm conference to raise awareness of environmental challenges and the right to a healthy environment.

Research released for the occasion revealed that microplastics are present in sachet‑packaged baby foods. Laboratory tests found an average of 54 microplastic particles per gram in Nestlé products and 99 particles per gram in Danone samples, meaning a single sachet can deliver thousands of microscopic plastic pieces to infants. Experts recommend reducing exposure by switching to glass jars, avoiding plastic‑packed foods, not microwaving plastic containers, using wooden cutting boards, and filtering boiled tap water to capture microplastics trapped in scale deposits.

The findings underscore growing concerns about the pervasive spread of microplastics in ecosystems and human diets, prompting calls for broader consumer‑level actions and policy attention to mitigate this invisible pollutant.
