World Environment Day sparks environmental education programmes in Spain and worldwide

World Environment Day was observed on 5 June, marking the anniversary of the 1972 United Nations Stockholm Conference on the environment. The day promotes awareness of ecological challenges and references the four ISO 14001‑based principles of prevention, correction, repair and improvement.

In the Spanish municipality of Telde, the local Environment Department closed its annual "Escuela Verde" programme with a prize ceremony for a school model‑making competition. Over the school year, 1,806 pupils from 16 schools participated in workshops and talks on topics such as pollinating bees and the role of wetlands. The competition featured 105 entries recreating the Charca de Maspalomas wetland, with first‑place awards given to CEIP Doctor Gregorio Chil y Naranjo, CEIP Príncipe de Asturias and CEIP Jinámar V. The councilor for the environment, Juan Francisco Artiles, and mayor Juan Antonio Peña highlighted the importance of nurturing environmental knowledge in the next generation.
