World Famous Gopher Hole Museum closes due to building issues

The World Famous Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alberta, has announced it is closed until further notice while organizers search for a new location. The museum, a popular roadside attraction featuring taxidermied gophers in miniature dioramas, has operated for 30 years in two historic buildings, including a former schoolhouse and a grain elevator office.

Museum director Laural Kurta stated that the current buildings have reached the end of their lifespan and can no longer be maintained. The facilities are unable to provide the necessary heat and humidity controls required to preserve the taxidermy collection. While the museum has been busier than ever, the lack of a long-term facility plan for the aging structures necessitated the closure.

Originally intended to operate for only five years, the volunteer-run museum has been self-sufficient through donations since its inception in 1996. A community fundraiser has been launched to support the construction of a new facility, with hopes of keeping the museum in Torrington.
