FAO marks World Food Day with focus on innovation and food security

World Food Day, observed on October 16, highlights the global challenges of hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity. Under the 2026 theme, ‘Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,’ the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) emphasizes the role of science, technology, and education in creating equitable access to nutritious food.

Global statistics reveal a stark reality: approximately 645 million people suffered from hunger in 2025, and 2.69 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet. While hunger has decreased for three consecutive years, progress remains uneven. Additionally, obesity affects 672 million adults and 124 million children under five globally, driven in part by the consumption of ultra-processed foods.

Efforts to combat these issues include reducing food waste, which remains a significant contradiction to global hunger. In various regions, initiatives range from scientific research into repurposing agro-food waste to community-led nutrition programs. Experts stress that food security requires coordinated action from governments, the private sector, and civil society to build resilient production and distribution systems.
