South Sudan and Sudan face worsening food crises amid funding shortages
The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued urgent warnings regarding escalating food crises in both South Sudan and Sudan. In South Sudan, over one million vulnerable people risk losing essential food and nutritional assistance by October. Approximately 7.8 million people—more than half the national population—are struggling to find food daily. The crisis is being driven by a combination of conflict, displacement, economic instability, and climate shocks, including the El Niño phenomenon which has caused droughts and crop failures in fertile regions.
In Sudan, the WFP reports that nearly 20 million people face acute hunger, with 5 million at urgent levels. While the agency has maintained the capacity to reach 4 to 5 million people monthly, severe funding shortages threaten operations. WFP funding for Sudan has dropped significantly, receiving $206 million so far in 2026 compared to $645 million the previous year. Officials warn that without new contributions, humanitarian operations may face further reductions in the coming weeks.
