World Friendship Day Highlights Mental Health Benefits of Platonic Bonds

Experts note that close, emotionally secure friendships—often termed "platonic intimacy"—serve as measurable indicators of long‑term mental, physical and cognitive wellbeing. Research links strong friendships to reduced stress, better emotional regulation, healthier aging, stronger immune responses and a lower risk of chronic illnesses.

The challenge for adults is finding time and uninterrupted interaction to build such bonds. Psychotherapist Kareena Mehta explains that work, commuting and digital, transactional communication limit opportunities for deep connection. Clinical sexologist Marinella Cozzolino adds that while friendship can be as intense as love, it lacks bodily attraction and may also bring uncomfortable emotions such as jealousy and envy. Both experts underscore the relevance of the World Friendship Day celebrated on July 30 as a reminder of friendship’s preventive health role.
