World Gold Council Grants $250,000 to Ghana for Responsible Artisanal Mining
The World Gold Council (WGC) announced an initial US$250,000 grant to Ghana, the first tranche of a planned US$1 million support package aimed at responsible artisanal and small‑scale mining (ASM). The funding comes under a memorandum of understanding between Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the WGC.
The grant will finance the registration of mining cooperatives under the Responsible Cooperative Mining Scheme Development Programme, establish a network of trusted gold processing plants, introduce traceability technologies and provide training for miners. Ghana reported a record 104 metric tons of declared artisanal gold in 2025 and expects production to rise to about 127 metric tons over the next three years, with the Gold Board centralising purchases to channel gold into legal markets and curb smuggling.
