World Health Organization faces major job cuts and leadership exits

The World Health Organization (WHO) is undergoing significant restructuring, involving the elimination of approximately 2,400 positions, which represents about one-quarter of its total workforce. This includes 900 staff reductions specifically in Geneva.

Several high-level officials are departing the organization. Jeremy Farrar, the WHO's scientific director, is scheduled to leave in late September. While official statements cite retirement, internal reports suggest growing frustration with bureaucracy and leadership. Additionally, Yukiko Nakatani, the head of data and health systems, departed Geneva in mid-August to take a position with the Japanese Ministry of Health.

These departures occur amid internal criticism regarding the leadership of Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the management of health data. The organizational shifts follow broader controversies involving research funding and document transparency within the field of global health research.
