World Health Organization reports 40% of healthcare workers face physical assault

The World Health Organization estimates that four in ten health‑care workers suffer physical violence during their careers, and more than 60% experience verbal abuse, threats or harassment. Front‑line staff such as nurses, emergency‑room personnel and paramedics are most at risk, and the violence contributes to burnout, staff shortages and reduced patient care. WHO is working with the International Labour Organization, the International Council of Nurses and Public Services International on global framework guidelines to improve workplace safety.

In Canada, Parliament passed Bill C‑3 (Royal Assent 16 December 2021), amending the Criminal Code to treat offences committed against health‑care professionals and first responders as aggravating factors in sentencing. The law aims to strengthen deterrence and acknowledge the heightened vulnerability of health‑care workers, reflecting a broader shift toward victim‑centered approaches in criminal justice.
