World Health Summit 2026 announces major global health initiatives
The World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin concluded with several major global health commitments and research findings. A Lancet Commission presented at the summit identified 17 interconnected catastrophic threats to human health and survival through the year 2100, including climate change, economic inequality, and the malicious use of artificial intelligence.
In maternal health, the Gates Foundation and Wellcome Leap announced a $100 million commitment to the Uzima initiative. This program aims to halve stillbirth rates within a decade by investing in technologies such as AI-enabled ultrasound and labor sensors, with an initial focus on sub-Saharan Africa.
Other significant announcements included a €250 million Women’s Health Initiative in Bangladesh supported by the European Investment Bank, and a €10 million pledge from Germany to the Global Financing Facility to improve access to maternal and child health products. Additionally, the Wellcome Global Monitor 2026 reported a decline in global trust in science compared to pre-pandemic levels.
