World Humanitarian Day: Global calls for protection of aid workers
World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on August 19, serves to honor humanitarian workers and recognize those affected by global crises. The date commemorates the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people.
International organizations are raising urgent alarms regarding the safety of aid workers. The United Nations reports that the conflict in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels of violence against humanitarian personnel. Similarly, the World Health Organization has recorded 914 attacks on healthcare facilities this year, resulting in 911 deaths and 1,486 injuries, primarily in Ukraine, Lebanon, Palestine, and Myanmar. The Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition documented 2,546 attacks on healthcare across 33 countries in 2025.
In response to these rising dangers, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies noted that nearly 100 of its staff and volunteers have been killed or died in the line of duty since 2023. Humanitarian groups are calling for increased protection under international humanitarian law and greater accountability for those who target medical and aid personnel.
