World Igbo Congress warns against threats to Igbo people over politics

The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has issued a warning to political actors in Nigeria against the intimidation or threatening of Igbo people based on their political affiliations. Basil Onwukwe, the vice-chairman of the WIC, stated that while the organization remains non-partisan, it will not remain silent if political disagreements jeopardize the lives or property of the Igbo community.

Onwukwe noted that the organization is monitoring political developments ahead of the 2027 general election. He specifically referenced past instances where political figures allegedly threatened Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding his ability to visit certain states. The WIC emphasized that political differences should not escalate into violence or threats, asserting that the group is prepared to defend its members' interests and safety across the country.
