World Jewish Congress President warns of Israel's future under Netanyahu
Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress and former advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has issued a sharp warning regarding the future of Israel. In an interview with Haaretz, Lauder stated that Israel would suffer significantly if Netanyahu is re-elected, particularly if far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich maintain any role in a future government. Lauder remarked, “If the parties of Ben-Gvir and Smotrich play any role within the government in the future, then Israel is doomed to fail.”
Lauder criticized the current administration for prioritizing political survival over national interests, comparing the current state of affairs to a “banana republic.” He expressed deep concern over the deterioration of Israel’s relationship with the United States, suggesting the country is losing bipartisan support. He noted that Israel has lost its connection with both the Democratic and Republican parties due to current political directions.
Reflecting on his past role as a mediator in the 1990s, Lauder accused Netanyahu of abandoning peace efforts, specifically regarding negotiations with Syria, to favor his own political longevity. He also highlighted a growing sense of alienation within the Jewish diaspora, stating that many no longer feel protected by Israel.
