ALDE Party urges EU to sanction individuals responsible for repression in Georgia

The ALDE Party, representing 25 European liberal and democratic parties, has called on the European Union to impose targeted sanctions on individuals responsible for repression and the undermining of democracy in Georgia. In a letter addressed to EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, ALDE leaders expressed alarm over the rapid deterioration of the democratic situation in the country.

The appeal follows the forced closure of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) office in Tbilisi. The foundation, which has operated in Georgia for over two decades, was compelled to cease activities after the Georgian government rejected its grant application, signaling that its work would only be permitted if it aligned with government priorities. ALDE leaders stated that these developments deviate from the standards expected of an EU candidate country and threaten the credibility of EU enlargement policy.

Separately, in celebration of Tbilisi Day, Mayor Kakha Kaladze honored 32 individuals with the title of Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi. The recipients include various professionals such as doctors, scientists, engineers, artists, and athletes, recognized for their contributions to the city's culture and development.
