World Justice Project releases 2026 Rule of Law Index
The World Justice Project (WJP) has released its 2026 Rule of Law Index, evaluating 143 countries across eight indicators, including corruption, fundamental rights, and judicial efficiency.
Romania recorded a 1.1% decrease in its score, ranking 45th globally out of 143 countries. Within its specific regional group—comprising the European Union, EFTA, and North America—Romania ranks 28th out of 31 countries. The report notes a decline in civic participation and a weakened capacity of the judiciary to limit executive power in Romania.
Globally, the index shows a continuing trend of regression, with 62% of the analyzed nations experiencing negative developments. Denmark, Norway, and Finland lead the global rankings, while Greece, Bulgaria, and Hungary occupy the lower end of the regional spectrum.
