World Karate Day commemorates Okinawan martial arts heritage
October 25 marks World Karate Day, a date established in 2005 by the Okinawa Prefecture Assembly in Japan. The observance, known in Japanese as Karate no Hi, commemorates a historic 1936 meeting in Naha, Okinawa, where masters gathered to discuss the identity and future of the martial art.
Originating in Okinawa, the discipline evolved through cultural exchanges with China and other Asian regions. The celebration aims to promote the history, traditions, and principles of karate—such as discipline, respect, and perseverance—while preserving the cultural legacy of Okinawa and its global practitioners.
