World Lake Day highlights global freshwater conservation needs

August 27 marks World Lake Day, an international observance established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the critical importance of lake ecosystems. Lakes provide approximately 90% of the world's liquid surface freshwater, supporting biodiversity, regulating climates, and providing essential resources for human consumption, agriculture, and industry.

Despite their importance, lakes face severe threats from climate change, pollution, and overexploitation. Issues such as rising temperatures, increased evaporation, agricultural runoff, and industrial waste jeopardize these habitats. In Morocco, for example, drought and human activity have pressured various lake types, while in the Dominican Republic, ecosystems like Lago Enriquillo face environmental challenges.

The day serves as a call to action for enhanced conservation, sustainable management, and the strengthening of legal frameworks to protect these vital water bodies for future generations.
