World Mangrove Day spurs mangrove conservation in Guyana, Antigua

Guyana’s Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha reported that mangrove coverage rose by 31% between 2020 and 2025, expanding from 19,616 to 25,644 hectares. He cited nearly $1 billion in investment, the completion of eleven green‑grey infrastructure projects and ongoing waste‑management efforts to protect coastal ecosystems.

In Antigua and Barbuda, the Environmental Awareness Group marked World Mangrove Day by urging residents to support mangrove protection. The group highlighted mangroves’ role in preventing erosion, buffering storm surges and sustaining local wildlife, and announced plans for further education activities such as field trips and a floating classroom programme.
