The match, held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, marked Zonneveld’s first appearance at the tournament and ended in a dramatic extension.
Other highlights from the opening night included Gary Anderson’s 10‑2 victory over Ryan Joyce, with high finishes of 144 and 141, and Wessel Nijman’s 10‑5 win over Dave Chisnall. The event runs from 18 – 26 July, features a £1 million prize fund and is regarded as the season’s second‑most important darts title after the World Championship.
