World Mental Health Day highlights need for diplomatic focus on trauma
World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, highlights the growing need to integrate mental health into international diplomacy and humanitarian response. As conflicts, mass displacement, and climate disasters increase, the scale of psychological trauma is outstripping the capacity of individual national health systems.
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one in five people experiencing conflict or displacement suffers from a mental health condition. Despite this, global spending on mental health remains a small fraction of overall health budgets, and psychosocial support is frequently the first area to face funding cuts in humanitarian crises.
Experts suggest that addressing collective trauma is essential for long-term peace and security. Untreated trauma can perpetuate cycles of violence and distrust, whereas incorporating community-based mental health care into post-conflict reconstruction can enhance societal resilience and reconciliation.
