World Meteorological Organization reports record heat imbalance as IPCC drops extreme warming scenario

The United Nations' World Meteorological Organization released its annual State of the Global Climate report, finding that Earth's energy imbalance—heat retained in the climate system—is at a record level and that the planet is more out of balance than at any time in the past 65 years. The report links the accelerating heat retention to rising greenhouse‑gas concentrations.

Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) removed the high‑end warming scenario that projected a 4‑6 °C temperature rise by the end of the century, deeming it unrealistic. The elimination of the extreme scenario does not imply that climate change is improving, but it does underscore ongoing scientific debate, including renewed attention to solar variability as a key climate factor.
