World Mosquito Day highlights global fight against deadly diseases

World Mosquito Day, observed annually on August 20, commemorates the 1897 discovery by British physician Sir Ronald Ross that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria. The day serves to raise global awareness regarding the dangers of mosquito-borne illnesses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, which cause hundreds of thousands of deaths annually.

Health authorities are implementing various strategies to combat these vectors. In João Pessoa, Brazil, the Municipal Health Secretariat is deploying Larvicidal Dissemination Stations (EDLs) to control Aedes aegypti by using mosquitoes to spread larvicides to new breeding sites. In Portugal, the ULS Alto Ave has alerted citizens to the presence of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Guimarães, emphasizing the need to eliminate stagnant water.

Experts highlight that climate change and urbanization are expanding mosquito habitats. Prevention remains the most effective defense, with recommendations including the use of repellents, mosquito nets, wearing protective clothing, and removing standing water from containers, gutters, and flowerpots to disrupt breeding cycles.
