World Nature Protection Day emphasizes ecosystem preservation

October 18 marks World Nature Protection Day, an observance dedicated to raising awareness about the preservation of forests, rivers, seas, and soil. The day emphasizes that healthy ecosystems are essential for food security, climate regulation, and clean water supplies.

The commemoration originated from a letter sent by former Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón to the United Nations Secretary-General. In the letter, written from exile in Madrid, Perón warned of the existential dangers posed to humanity and the planet by environmental degradation and called for urgent action to restore ecological balance.

Efforts to protect nature involve both large-scale conservation of biodiversity and small-scale daily actions, such as waste reduction, water conservation, and environmental education. In Argentina, for example, the Comprehensive Environmental Education Law has established environmental awareness as a public policy to promote a balanced relationship between social, ecological, and economic dimensions.
