World Oceans Day 2026 drives plastic‑cleanup drives in Sri Lanka and Commonwealth

Sri Lanka’s Central Environmental Authority marked World Oceans Day 2026 with a campaign titled “A Letter to You, From the Ocean”. The appeal urges citizens to curb plastic litter, protect coral reefs and address rising sea temperatures, noting that beaches from Hikkaduwa to Trincomalee are “burdened by plastic bottles, bags and wrappers”. The campaign’s message, written as if from the ocean, includes the plea, “I want to live for thousands of more years, just for you. But I need your help.”

In parallel, the Commonwealth Games’ King’s Baton Relay has been linked to the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, which aims to stop one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters before the Glasgow 2026 Games (23 July–2 August). More than 625,000 items have been collected so far along the relay route, with volunteers and athletes such as Paralympian Ellie Simmonds joining beach clean‑ups across Commonwealth nations. The initiative targets plastic waste that threatens the many small‑island states that comprise a third of the world’s ocean waters.
