World of Warcraft developers explain why a sequel is unlikely
Developers of the newly announced World of Warcraft: Forever have addressed speculation regarding a potential World of Warcraft 2, stating that a direct sequel is unlikely to be necessary.
Announced during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, World of Warcraft: Forever is described as a Classic+ version of the franchise. It aims to return players to a classic Azeroth style while introducing updated zones, dungeons, and raids. Lead designer Kris Zierhut and encounter design leader Mike Nuthals explained that the decision to focus on evolving the existing game rather than starting a new sequel stems from the strength of the current infrastructure.
Zierhut noted that the game's engine, server capabilities, and combat mechanics have been continuously refined over 25 years. The development team believes that discarding this established foundation to start from scratch would be counterproductive. Instead, the team intends to use the Forever project to explore the existing lore in new ways while leveraging significant technical improvements in graphics, rendering, and server efficiency.
