World Polio Day 2026: Global efforts intensify to eradicate polio

On October 24, 2026, nations and health organizations worldwide observed World Polio Day, focusing on the theme ‘One Day, One Focus: Ending Polio for Good.’ The day honors Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the first successful vaccine in 1955.

In Nigeria, health authorities in Zamfara State are addressing an outbreak in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, which has recorded six cases. Total infections in Zamfara have reached approximately 22 since 2025. Meanwhile, in Lagos, the Children’s Parliament has called for improved surveillance and inclusive communication, specifically requesting sign language interpretation for immunization campaigns.

In Somalia, the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF have launched nationwide advocacy to strengthen routine immunization. Similarly, Malawi has intensified awareness campaigns following the detection of a polio case earlier this year. In Pakistan, officials honored over 400,000 frontline health workers in preparation for a November vaccination drive.

Global health bodies continue to monitor epidemiological shifts. The WHO recommends transitioning to three doses of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) to increase immunity by 18%. Recent reports indicate 11 new cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV), primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and six new cases of wild poliovirus (WPV1) in Afghanistan.
