World Post Day commemorates the founding of the Universal Postal Union

October 9 marks World Post Day, a date established in 1969 by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to commemorate the founding of the organization in 1874. The UPU, which was formed following a congress in Bern, Switzerland, serves to regulate and strengthen the international postal system.

The postal sector remains a vital component of the global economy and daily life, operating an extensive logistics network that includes approximately 663,000 post offices and over five million employees worldwide. The industry facilitates the movement of 436 billion letters and items annually, playing a key role in international trade, communication, and the transition toward a circular economy.

Historically, the UPU became a specialized agency of the United Nations following a congress in Paris. The observance of World Post Day emphasizes the strategic pillars of innovation, integration, and inclusion within the global postal network.
