World Rabies Day: Global efforts focus on vaccination and prevention
World Rabies Day is observed globally on September 28 to raise awareness about the prevention of rabies, a viral disease that is nearly 100% fatal once clinical symptoms appear. The date commemorates the death of Louis Pasteur, who developed the first effective vaccine.
Health authorities and community organizations are emphasizing the ‘One Health’ approach, which recognizes the link between human, animal, and environmental health. Key prevention strategies include mass vaccination of pets, responsible pet ownership, and immediate medical attention following animal bites or scratches. In many regions, such as Paraguay and parts of India, vaccination drives and awareness workshops are being conducted to reduce human exposure.
In Costa Rica, while canine rabies is controlled, authorities are monitoring outbreaks of bovine paralytic rabies. In other areas, such as Cameroon and the Philippines, officials are calling for stricter controls on stray animals and increased community cooperation to prevent transmission. Medical experts advise that if a bite occurs, the wound should be washed immediately with soap and water before seeking professional medical care.
