US quantum investment drives urgent post‑quantum security migration

Quantum computers are nearing the ability to break current encryption algorithms such as RSA and ECC, putting global banking, medical, corporate and defence communications at risk. The year 2026 has been designated the “Year of Quantum Security,” highlighting the narrowing window to transition to post‑quantum cryptography.

The U.S. government has recently taken a $2 billion equity stake in nine quantum‑technology companies, signalling that quantum capability is now treated as critical national infrastructure. While standards for post‑quantum cryptography already exist, the real challenge is migrating existing systems. Federal migration deadlines are set between 2027 and 2035, creating a gap between the rapid development of quantum hardware and the slower adoption of quantum‑resistant security measures. Experts warn that many organisations have not yet aligned their security upgrades with the pace of government investment, leaving a vulnerability that could be exploited as quantum computers become operational.
