World Rivers Day: Sustainable tourism in Turkey and historical walks in Palermo

To mark World Rivers Day, various initiatives are highlighting the cultural and environmental importance of waterways in Turkey and Italy.

In Turkey, new sustainable travel routes have been introduced. On the Euphrates, a new 50-passenger solar-powered boat has been launched to allow low-impact exploration of the Atatürk Dam lake area, connecting the provinces of Diyarbakır, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, and Malatya. Additionally, the Kızılırmak river in Cappadocia offers unique perspectives of the region, including the ceramic traditions of Avanos.

In Palermo, Italy, a historical-geological walk titled ‘Sulle tracce del Papireto e del Kemonia’ was organized by BCsicilia and the Università Popolare. The event explores the city's hidden ancient waterways, the Papireto and Kemonia, which were once vital to urban development but are now largely channeled or covered beneath modern streets and buildings.
