World Rowing disputes Fitzroy River approval for 2032 Olympics

World Rowing has reaffirmed its president’s stance that the Fitzroy River in Central Queensland has not yet been approved as a venue for the 2032 Olympic rowing regatta. This position contradicts claims by the Queensland government that the site is “signed, sealed and delivered.”

World Rowing president Jean-Christophe Rolland expressed concerns regarding the Rockhampton site, specifically citing unanswered questions about flooding risks. While a joint release with Paddle Worldwide acknowledged a technical report suggesting the river could provide a “safe, fair and consistent field of play,” the organization noted that several additional elements must be confirmed. These include technical details and the necessary service levels and facilities for Olympic and Paralympic competition.

The dispute follows the departure of Brisbane Olympic CEO Cindy Hook, who reportedly had misgivings regarding the state government’s insistence on the Fitzroy River site. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli previously stated in parliament that the venue had passed technical assessments “with flying colours.”
