World Rugby bans hip drop and knee drop tackles
World Rugby has announced new regulations to outlaw the ‘hip drop’ and ‘knee drop’ tackling techniques to improve player welfare. The decision follows research conducted by Leeds Beckett University after the Shape of the Game conference in February.
The ‘hip drop’ tackle, where a player uses their bodyweight to pull an opponent to the ground and lands on their legs, will be specifically included under Law 9.13 starting November 1. Offenders will face a minimum sanction of a penalty. This move aims to prevent significant leg injuries, such as those experienced by player Elrigh Louw.
Additionally, new guidance regarding the ‘knee drop’ tackle—where a defender drops to one or both knees before contact—took effect on October 5. While the knee drop is not classified as inherently unsafe, the guidance clarifies existing laws that prohibit tackling while on the ground, providing match officials with clearer direction on how to identify and sanction the move.
