World Sight Day highlights rising myopia and digital eye strain risks

World Sight Day, observed annually in October, has prompted global health organizations and medical specialists to raise awareness regarding eye health and the rising prevalence of vision impairment. A central concern is the impact of digital devices, which contributes to digital eye strain and the increasing rates of myopia, particularly among children and adolescents. Experts recommend the ‘20-20-20’ rule—looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—to mitigate fatigue.

In Spain, the Miranza Ocular Wellbeing Barometer reports a decline in perceived eye health, with women and individuals over 40 reporting the lowest levels of wellbeing. Meanwhile, in Mexico, the IMSS and health officials emphasize that chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension can lead to serious complications such as glaucoma and retinopathy, urging regular medical checkups.

Global trends suggest that the World Health Organization estimates nearly 50% of the population could be myopic by 2050. Health advocates stress that up to 50% of vision loss is preventable through early detection, healthy diets, adequate outdoor time for children, and regular professional examinations.
