World Sight Day initiatives promote eye health and support visually impaired communities

World Sight Day was observed through various initiatives aimed at promoting eye health and supporting the visually impaired. In Bengaluru, India, approximately 300 participants joined the ‘World Blind Walk’ in front of Vidhana Soudha. Organized by Project Vision in partnership with OneSight, the EssilorLuxottica Foundation, and St Claret College, the event sought to express solidarity with the 40 million visually challenged people globally. Participants experienced the challenges of navigation by walking blindfolded, and high-quality white canes were distributed to visually impaired participants to aid mobility.

In the Longleng district, the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment observed the day under the theme ‘Love Your Eyes.’ Activities included awareness sessions at the District Hospital and PHC Tamlu, focusing on the prevention of avoidable blindness, regular eye check-ups, and early detection of vision problems. Eye screenings were conducted, and reading glasses were provided to beneficiaries to improve access to basic eye care services.
