World Stage concert venue in Philadelphia to close permanently
World Stage, the Philadelphia performance venue formerly known as World Cafe Live, will close permanently following scheduled performances this Saturday night. The closure follows a period of financial and operational difficulties for the University City establishment.
CEO J. Sean Diaz attributed the closure to the difficulty of sustaining independent small to mid-sized venues without philanthropic support, citing market dominance by large entertainment conglomerates. The venue had previously faced labor issues, including a worker walkout last June, and subsequently unionized.
Financial challenges included a lease default involving more than $1 million owed to the building owner, the University of Pennsylvania, as well as reported issues regarding tax debts and a lapsed liquor license.
