World Standards Day and religious commemorations observed October 14

October 14 marks World Standards Day, an annual observance by members of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The day honors specialists who develop international standards to meet societal, market, and legislative requirements, facilitate new technologies, and prevent injuries or deaths caused by natural disasters, accidents, and epidemics.

Additionally, October 14 is recognized as World Sight Day.

In the religious calendar, the day commemorates the Great Martyrs Gervasius and Nazarius, as well as Saint Ignatius, Bishop of Mytilene. Historical accounts note that Nazarius, a disciple of the Apostle Peter, distributed his wealth to the poor and preached in Milan and France before being martyred by the governor Annulinus. Saint Ignatius of Mytilene, born in 1492, served as Metropolitan of Mytilene during the Ottoman occupation and passed away in 1566.
