World Standards Day emphasizes role of technical standards in sustainable development

World Standards Day, observed on October 14, highlights the critical role of international technical standards in fostering a safer, more sustainable, and innovative global society. The observance is promoted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the current focus centers on SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Technical standards are essential to this goal, as they facilitate the development of reliable, efficient, and safe energy technologies necessary for the global energy transition.

Furthermore, the emphasis on SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, underscores the necessity of cooperation between governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society. Standards serve as a common language that ensures quality, safety, and compatibility, helping industries become more competitive and facilitating international trade.
