World Suicide Prevention Day: Global efforts to change the narrative
On World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, various regions across the Americas and Europe are conducting awareness campaigns and implementing new health strategies to combat suicide. The global theme, ‘Changing the Narrative,’ encourages open dialogue to reduce stigma and improve access to mental health support.
In Colombia, the Ministry of Health has introduced the ‘Código Dorado’ (Golden Code) to provide immediate institutional responses to suicidal behavior. This follows reports from the Procuraduría General de la Nación showing a 5.6% increase in suicide attempts in Colombia through August 2026 compared to the previous year. Conversely, completed suicides in Colombia saw a 1.92% decrease during the first half of 2026.
In Mexico, health specialists are highlighting the link between substance abuse and increased suicide risk, noting that problematic use can increase mortality risk by 5.58 times. Data from INEGI indicates 8,709 suicide deaths in Mexico during 2025. In Brazil, there has been a notable increase in the use of mental health medications, with antipsychotic use rising by over 50% between 2013 and 2023.
Other regional efforts include community-based workshops in Argentina, inclusion-focused sporting events in Brazil, and specialized training for healthcare professionals in Martinique to foster interprofessional networks for crisis management.
