World Trade Center history and rare interior photography

The history and legacy of the World Trade Center are highlighted through architectural details and rare photographic perspectives. Architect Minoru Yamasaki designed the complex, which opened on April 3, 1973, featuring the 110-story Twin Towers that became iconic symbols of New York City and American economic power. Yamasaki passed away in 1986, years before the towers were destroyed during the September 11 attacks.

A collection of 18 photographs attributed to electrician Konstantin Petrov provides a rare look at the interior of the complex during its functional years. These images capture the ordinary atmosphere of the towers, including empty corridors, elevator areas, and the sophisticated interior of the Windows on the World restaurant located on the 106th and 107th floors. The photographs depict the site as a routine workplace and dining destination, showing views of the Statue of Liberty and the surrounding New York City skyline.
