World Travel & Tourism Council says travel sector investment tops $1 trillion in 2025
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released its Economic Impact Research Global Trends Report showing that total investment in travel and tourism exceeded $1 trillion (A$1.5 trillion) in 2025, an 8.5% year‑on‑year increase. The sector generated a record $11.6 trillion (A$17.6 trillion) in global GDP.
The United States, China, India and Saudi Arabia together accounted for almost half of all capital investment, contributing roughly $500 billion (A$760 billion). Each market is expanding its tourism pipeline through infrastructure projects, supportive policies and private‑sector confidence. China aims for a $402 billion pipeline by 2036, India is boosting connectivity and destination development, the United States is leveraging major events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 drives rapid tourism growth.
WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara emphasized the link between capital and growth, stating, “Investment and growth go hand in hand. The destinations and economies making long‑term commitments to travel and tourism today are positioning themselves to capture tomorrow’s jobs, visitor spending and economic opportunities.”
