World Uyghur Congress calls for global action against China human rights abuses

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and other human rights organizations are calling for sustained international action against alleged human rights abuses in China. As China prepares to mark the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, activists plan to hold protests in Germany, Belgium, and Türkiye to highlight the repression of Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hongkongers, and Southern Mongolians.

Human rights defenders expressed concern over China’s new Ethnic Unity Law, which they claim escalates policies of cultural assimilation and religious persecution. The WUC noted that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has previously assessed that these abuses may constitute crimes against humanity.

In Germany, the Tibet Initiative Deutschland, the World Uyghur Congress, and Freedom for Hong Kong have issued a joint open letter to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the German government. The letter urges the administration to take a clear and consistent stand against the suppression of language, culture, and religion, noting that these repressive measures and persecutions are increasingly extending beyond China’s borders.
