World Uyghur Congress says China spreading Uyghur repression abroad

On August 1, 2026, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) issued a press release accusing China of extending its repression of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples beyond Xinjiang. The WUC cited the recent detention and deportation of Dolkun Isa, president of the Uyghur Democratic Movement, by Moroccan authorities in Casablanca, alleging possible Chinese pressure.

The organization also marked the 12th anniversary of the 2014 Yarkand massacre with a protest outside the Chinese consulate in Munich, referenced testimony from former Chinese police officer Zhang Yabo describing raids, surveillance and forced‑labour supervision in East Turkistan, and warned that Kazakhstan’s new Ethnic Unity Law could be used to target Turkic activists abroad. The WUC called for an independent investigation and urged the international community to clarify any external influence in these incidents.
