World Uyghur Congress welcomes EU Parliament stance on China

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has expressed support for new recommendations from the European Parliament regarding political relations with China. The WUC highlighted ongoing concerns over the protection of Uyghur cultural identity and the detention of intellectuals.

The European Parliament's recommendations call for EU-China ties to be grounded in human rights and international law. The Parliament recognized that approximately three million Uyghurs have been subjected to mass imprisonment and forced labor. The resolution demands the release of several individuals, including scholar Ilham Tohti, physician Gulshan Abbas, and the siblings of former WUC president Dolkun Isa. Additionally, the Parliament included clauses condemning China’s new ethnic unity law.

The WUC also noted the ten-year anniversary of the detention of Uyghur writer and scholar Yalqun Rozi, who was arrested in Urumqi in 2016 and subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison for allegedly inciting subversion of state power.
