World Vegetarian Day highlights dietary shifts in Brazil

World Vegetarian Day, observed on October 1, highlights the intersection of nutrition, health, and sustainability. Established in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society and supported by the International Vegetarian Union, the date serves as a platform to discuss dietary choices beyond simple meat avoidance.

In Brazil, dietary trends show a growing interest in reducing animal product consumption. While a 2018 study indicated 14% of the population identified as vegetarian, more recent data presents a more nuanced picture. A 2024 GFI Brasil survey found that 5% of consumers identified as vegetarian or vegan, while 21% described themselves as flexitarian, meaning they reduce but do not eliminate animal products. Another study by Datafolha for the Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira indicated that 7% of respondents considered themselves vegan, either partially or totally.

To mark the occasion, various vegetarian recipes, such as pumpkin sauce spaghetti and escarole crepes, are being promoted to encourage meat-free meal options.
