World Vegetarian Day observed on October 1

October 1 marks World Vegetarian Day, an annual observance established in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society and supported globally by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978. The day serves to raise awareness regarding the ethical, health, and environmental benefits of plant-based lifestyles and initiates Vegetarian Awareness Month.

While vegetarianism involves excluding meat and fish, various dietary modalities exist, such as those including eggs and dairy. Health organizations, including the British NHS, emphasize that a vegetarian diet must be well-planned to ensure adequate intake of proteins, iron, and vitamin B12. Similarly, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition recommends increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and legumes while reducing processed meats to maintain nutritional balance.
