World Water Council President calls for new water management doctrine
Loïc Fauchon, President of the World Water Council, has called for a global shift toward a "new doctrine for water use" during the opening of Cairo Water Week. Fauchon argued that the international community must move beyond simply increasing water supply and instead focus on proactively managing demand and controlling consumption.
He described the expansion of wastewater reuse as the “water revolution of this century,” noting its potential for agriculture, industry, and domestic use. Fauchon also highlighted the need for prudent use of deep groundwater, low-cost desalination, and the deployment of smarter, biodiversity-respecting reservoirs.
Addressing the link between water and food security, Fauchon emphasized the necessity of reducing global food loss and waste, noting that 40 percent of produced food is never eaten. He urged for international cooperation to share best practices, specifically praising Egypt’s expertise in wastewater treatment and recycling as a model for other nations.
